It’s been nearly three years since Apple Pay launched into the world of mobile payments. Since inception, it’s faced plenty of critics, but that hasn’t stopped the tech giant from securing retail partnerships to help Apple Pay gain ground in-store, online and in-app.
For many consumers, the fundamental question remains: What stores accept Apple Pay? We’ve provided a full list of retailers that accept Apple Pay below.
Apple Pay has been gaining ground because of its NFC contactless payment technology, which encrypts payment credentials and better protects both the retailer and the cardholder. Apple Pay allows for consumers to pay in-store, online, and in-app without swiping or inserting a card, or entering card credentials online. The appeal of Apple Pay for businesses is the ability to process payments faster and with secure verification (Touch ID and FaceID). Apple Pay also provides a new payment route to attract consumers who are looking to pay via a mobile device at the point of checkout.
Apple wasn’t the first to bring Bluetooth, wireless tech, and NFC into payments, but it was the first to make it popular among the masses. The NFC technology is what makes this payment method extremely secure, creating a one-time token that replaces any sensitive cardholder data. This has helped Apple Pay gain ground with retailers across the globe, especially since more point of sale systems integrate the ability to accept contactless payments than ever before. For retailers looking to accept Apple Pay, all it takes is having the right payment processing partner to get started.
One potential significant impact for Apple Pay is the company’s latest announcement on Sept. 12 about the upcoming launch of the iPhone X, which removes the fingerprint sensor in favor of facial recognition technology called Face ID. Now, instead of placing a fingerprint on the phone at the point of checkout to authorize a purchase, users will rely on a quick facial scan to authenticate their identity. The iPhone 8 however, will keep the fingerprint sensor.
The move away from fingerprint authentication is because, although difficult to perform, it is possible for a fingerprint to be stolen and replicated. With facial recognition, the technology relies on unique facial features such as a person’s iris and facial structure to prove their identity, which is much harder to fabricate.
Beyond retailers, there are also a growing number of banks in the U.S. and Canada that accept Apple Pay. To date, Apple Pay is accepted at more than two million store locations — and that number continues to grow every month. Increasingly, Apple Pay has expanded beyond physical stores and is being integrated into apps, to provide a more seamless checkout experience. Apple Pay is also quickly making its way into websites as a digital payment option at checkout.
